Cold snap keeping Lawrence chilly
Temperatures to reach only mid 30s today
Mostly cloudy skies and windchills in the teens are keeping Lawrence cold today.
“It looks like a blustery and cold midweek,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “”We’ve had a few flurries, but most of them have been off to the south of us.”
At 8:20 a.m., the temperature was 31 degrees, the humidity was 63 percent and winds were from the north at 16 mph, making the windchill 17 degrees. The average low for this date is 23 degrees. The record low was minus 15 in 1933.
The average high for this date is 43 degrees and the record high was 66, set in 1943, she said.
Lawrence already reached its high of 37 degrees today before a cold front moved in around 6 a.m. Temperatures were falling below freezing by 8 a.m. and were expected to dip into the upper 20s by midmorning, Schack said.
“We’re not going to climb very far today. It’s a cold start,” Schack said.
She said this afternoon’s high would reach about 35 degrees, with northerly winds 10 to 18 mph, keeping windchills in the teens through the day.
Tonight winds die down, becoming light and variable. Skies will become mostly clear and temperatures will fall to a low of 15 degrees on Thursday morning, Schack said.
Thursday’s high will climb to 48 degrees, with southwest winds 10 to 20 mph, gusting up to 25 mph, she said.
Friday’s morning low will be 21 degrees. Friday’s afternoon high temperature will climb to 38 degrees, with partly cloudy skies, she said.
