Cold, with cloudy skies this afternoon

Temperatures to reach high 30s today

Winter crept back into Lawrence over the weekend and plunged temperatures into the teens this morning.

“It’s staying chilly today, with our temperatures below average,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “You’ll definitely need that coat this morning and I think you’ll need it this afternoon.”

At 7:15 a.m., the temperature was 18 degrees, the humidity was 77 percent and winds were from the northwest at 5 mph, making the windchill 11 degrees. The average low for this date is 23 degrees and the record low is minus 10, set in 1982.

Temperatures will increase into the low 30s by noon and will reach a high of 39 by late afternoon, with northwest winds 3 to 8 mph, Schack said.

“It looks like we’ll stay below average for the afternoon,” Schack said. The average high for this date is 43 degrees and the record high was 69, set in 1904.

After some morning sun, skies will become cloudy this afternoon into the evening, Schack said.

Tuesday’s morning low temperature will be 20 degrees, with the high climbing to 40 degrees and cloudy skies throughout the day, she said.

Lawrence will have a chance for a few flurries Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, she said.

Wednesday’s morning low temperature will be 23 degrees, with the high climbing to 33 degrees by Wednesday afternoon.
