Members of Boy Scout Troop 55, sponsored by Westside Presbyterian Church, recently attended a “Kanik” winter backcountry program at Philmont Scout Ranch in the mountains near Cimarron, N.M. The crew set up camp in Miranda Meadow at an approximate height of 9,000 feet. Among the activities were: hiking, sledding, snowball fights and improvisational ice hockey.

The group dined at the historic St. James Hotel in Cimarron and watched two video presentations about the hotel. On a tour of the hotel, they viewed haunted rooms, a mysterious painting and the original saloon. The group also toured Villa Philmonte, a museum of Waite Phillips and family, who were the initial donors and founders of Philmont Scout Ranch.

Those who attended were: Bryce Baringer, crew chief; Drew Braden, assistant crew chief; Matt Avila; Jacob Christilles; Kevin Cottrell and David Hanson. They were accompanied by adult leaders Scott Braden, scoutmaster, and Pat Flavin and Jim Peterson.
