Kansas baseball wins opener

February 3, 2006

— Jared Schweitzer and Gus Milner hit solo home runs, and Matt Baty drove in three runs as Kansas University popped Hawaii-Hilo, 11-1, in its season baseball opener late Wednesday night.

Baty, Milner and Schweitzer had three hits apiece to pace the Jayhawks' 14-hit attack. Right-hander Kodiak Quick held the Vulcans to one run on six hits during seven innings on the mound.

Milner led off the second inning with a home run over the left-center-field wall. Sophomore Ryne Price was then hit by a pitch and stole second. Brock Simpson beat out an infield hit, allowing a hustling Price to score from second. Baty drove in Simpson with a single, giving KU a 3-0 lead.

Schweitzer hit his 13th career home run with one out in the fifth inning. Milner followed with a single up the middle and moved to second on an error. Moments later, Ryne Price drove Milner home with a single to right.

Kansas scored four runs while sending 10 batters to the plate in the eighth inning. KU added two runs in the ninth.

The teams were to play again late Thursday.
