Topeka ? Legislation introduced Thursday would prohibit human cloning.

It was unclear, however, if the bill would prohibit what is called Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer where DNA is transplanted into a woman’s unfertilized egg. The egg is then stimulated to divide, as it would when fertilized by a sperm, and stem cells are harvested.

Sen. Phil Journey, R-Haysville, said it was important for the Legislature to learn more about the issues surrounding embryonic stem cell research.

“The creation and destruction of human life for scientific experimentation is only a step away from Dr. Mengele,” Journey said. Dr. Josef Mengele was a Nazi doctor who conducted lethal experiments on prisoners in concentration camps during World War II.
