Mountaineers hold off Irish on last-second miss; Duke escapes at BC

? Kevin Pittsnogle scored 22 points, and No. 11 West Virginia remained unbeaten in the rough-and-tumble Big East by holding off Notre Dame, 71-70, Wednesday night.

West Virginia (16-4, 7-0) clung to a 71-65 lead with less than one minute left. Notre Dame scored the next five points, and Chris Quinn, who led the Irish with 24 points, had a chance to win the game, but missed a jumper with less than two seconds left.

No. 2 Duke 83, No. 15 Boston College 81

Boston – J.J. Redick scored 28 points, including four free throws in the final 65 seconds.

Duke led by as many as 18 early in the second half before BC whittled the lead to six. The Eagles made it a one-possession game in the final seconds without star Craig Smith, who fouled out with three minutes left.

Shelden Williams finished with 21 points and seven blocks for the Blue Devils.

No. 3 Memphis 84, Tulsa 61

Tulsa, Okla. – Darius Washington Jr. scored 22 points, and Rodney Carney added 12 of his 19 during a first-half run to help Memphis.

Carney scored 12 straight Memphis points – including three dunks – during a 19-2 run that put the Tigers (20-2, 6-0 Conference USA) on their way to their ninth straight victory.

No. 13 Tennessee 69, Vanderbilt 62

Knoxville, Tenn. – Major Wingate scored 16 points to lift Tennessee.

The Volunteers needed a push at the end to overtake Vanderbilt and remain a perfect 11-0 at home.

Vanderbilt was led by DeMarre Carroll with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

No. 18 N.C. State 66, Virginia 64

Raleigh, N.C. – Cameron Bennerman followed up his own miss for the go-ahead basket with 74 seconds remaining to help the Wolfpack rally.

Tony Bethel scored 16 points to lead N.C. State.

J.R. Reynolds led the Cavaliers with 16.

No. 21 Michigan 71, Penn State 65

State College, Pa. – Dion Harris scored 23 points, and Daniel Horton added 13 points and some key buckets down the stretch as Michigan held off a late rally.

Horton drained two key free throws with 17 seconds left that gave Michigan a 71-65 lead.

No. 22 Indiana 72, Northwestern 63

Bloomington, Ind. – Roderick Wilmont scored a career-high 23 points in his first start this season, and Errek Suhr provided a second-half spark for Indiana.

The Hoosiers have won 13 straight Big Ten home games.

Vedran Vukusic scored 18 points for Northwestern.

No. 23 Iowa 77, Purdue 68

West Lafayette, Ind. – Jeff Horner scored a career-high 32 points and set an Iowa record for career three-point field goals with seven, including six in the second half, when the Hawkeyes rallied from an 11-point deficit and took control in the final six minutes.

No. 24 LSU 84, Auburn 69

Baton Rouge, La. – Darrel Mitchell scored 27 points, and LSU remained unbeaten in the Southeastern Conference.

Mitchell, who has scored 79 points in the last three games, was 8-for-11 from the field and made all nine of his free throws.

Reserve Frank Tolbert led Auburn with 15 points.
