Warm day casts shadow on groundhog prediction
Temperatures to climb into 60s again
Lawrence’s weather forecast calls for another springlike day in the low 60s – a sharp contrast to the much-celebrated Groundhog Day forecast.
“Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow earlier this morning, which, according to him, means six more weeks of winter,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “But I’ll tell you what, it doesn’t look like it today. It will be a beautiful day.”
At 12:10 p.m., the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 57 degrees, the humidity was 37 percent and winds were from the south at 8 mph. The average morning low for this date is 23 degrees and the record low was minus 13 in 1905.
Today’s skies will be mostly clear in the afternoon, with winds from the northwest at 3 to 10 mph and temperatures will warming up to a high of 61 degrees, Schack said. The average high for this date is 43 degrees and the record high was 69 in 1992, she said.
“Tonight we’ll drop off to 34 for a low temperature, keeping it relatively mild,” Schack said.
Friday won’t be quite as warm as today, but will still be above average, with the high reaching 49 degrees, she said. Friday will also bring a few more clouds and winds from the northwest at 8 to 15 mph, she said.
“There may be a sprinkle, with some thicker clouds on Friday,” she said.
Saturday will be partly cloudy, with the morning low starting at 24 degrees and climbing to a high of 42 degrees, she said.
Sunday’s high will be 45 degrees, with mostly cloudy skies.
“We’ll have temperatures a little bit colder, at least below average, on Monday and Tuesday, in the upper 30s and low 40s,” she said.
