Bears end skid vs. ‘Cats

? Curtis Jerrells hit a three-pointer from the left wing with 22 seconds left to give Baylor a 72-70 overtime victory against Kansas State on Wednesday night.

The victory broke a 20-game Baylor losing streak, giving the Bears (1-6, 1-6 Big 12) their first win since a 67-59 victory over Colorado at home on Jan. 19, 2005.

After Jerrell’s basket, Kansas State (12-6, 3-4) had two more chances. Lance Harris attempted a three-pointer from the left side with eight seconds left. The ball rimmed out, and Baylor’s Kevin Rogers grabbed the rebound. The Wildcats tied up the ball with two seconds left, and the possession went to Kansas State.

Kansas State inbounded to Cartier Martin, whose shot glanced off the backboard. Henry Dugat got the rebound for the Bears as time expired.

Rogers’ putback tied the game at 62 with 1:21 left in regulation. Neither team could score in the final minute, and Martin missed the winning jumper for the Wildcats at the buzzer.

Dugat, who scored 17 in the first half, led all scorers with a career-high 23 points. Jerrells added 15 and Aaron Bruce 10 for the Bears.

Clent Stewart led Kansas State with 19 points. Martin added 15 and David Hoskins 13.

Baylor trailed 23-13 with just over eight minutes to play in the first half, but cut the margin to 33-32 at halftime. The Bears took their first lead at 47-45 on Bruce’s three-pointer with 14 minutes to play in the second half.

No. 7 Texas 66, Missouri 53

Columbia, Mo. – P.J. Tucker scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and added 11 rebounds, and Kenton Paulino added 14 points for the Longhorns (18-3, 6-1 Big 12), who shrugged off a 10-point loss at Oklahoma on Saturday and have won 10 of 11. The Longhorns led by eight at halftime despite 33-percent shooting.

Texas led by as many as 21 points in the second half before Missouri made it somewhat respectable at the finish with 11 straight points. Texas scored only three points in the final 4:12.

Missouri (10-9, 3-5) has lost four in a row, all by double digits and two of them at home. Jimmy McKinney had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Kevin Young had 13 points, and Thomas Gardner added 15 on an off-night.

Gardner, the Big 12’s leading scorer with a 21-point average, missed 10 of his first 11 shots and finished 5-for-16. He has struggled against the two highest-ranked teams Missouri has faced, getting only six against Illinois in December.

Tucker was 1-for-4 from the field in the first half and 9-for-11 the rest of the way. The double-double was his first in seven games since the Big 12 opener.

Texas ran its winning streak to eight in a row over Missouri, seven of them against Quin Snyder. The Longhorns are the only Big 12 team that Snyder hasn’t beaten.

No. 19 Oklahoma 71, Texas A&M 63

Norman, Okla. – Michael Neal continued his hot shooting and led Oklahoma with 16 points. It was the fifth straight victory for the Sooners (14-4, 5-2 Big 12). Texas A&M (13-6, 3-5) stayed in the game by shooting 10-for-15 from behind the arc.

Neal, a junior who missed the Sooners’ first two conference games because of injury, went 4-of-9 from three-point range – the fourth straight game in which he has made at least four shots from behind the arc.
