NATO wraps up 90-day earthquake relief mission

? NATO wrapped up its 90-day mission to the earthquake-battered parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, saying it had completed its goal of providing relief and helping survivors endure the harsh winter in Kashmir.

The relief mission was the alliance’s first in a non-NATO territory. Pakistan asked the 26-member organization to join the operation two days after the Oct. 8 quake struck Pakistani Kashmir and the country’s northwest, killing about 87,000 people and injuring thousands.

NATO officials insisted they were not pulling out too early because of political or diplomatic concerns about Western forces lingering in Kashmir, the Himalayan territory divided between Pakistan and India and over which they have fought two wars. Both claim the entire area.

Maurits Jochems, a NATO ambassador, said the original agreement with the Pakistani government was to stay for 90 days, and there was no need to stay beyond today’s deadline.
