Eagle girls rally, boys fall

? Down 10 points with just two minutes remaining, the Veritas Christian girls basketball team stormed back to force overtime and ultimately steal a 61-54 victory Tuesday over Kansas City North (Mo.) Christian.

Adi Willems scored 22 points and had 16 rebounds for the Eagles (7-8), while Kristie Tiegreen scored 19 points and pulled down 29 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

“We decided to pick up full-court man-to-man and pressure. It’s amazing how our full-court pressure really bothered them,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “Our girls went after the steals and really pushed the ball to the hoop and got fouled and made their free throws.

“This is the best fourth-quarter comeback I’ve been around. Once we made it to overtime we knew it was our game.”

The Eagles will return to action Friday against Olathe Christian in Eudora. Veritas won an earlier meeting this year in overtime on the Warriors’ home floor.

“It should be a barnburner,” Shelton said.

K.C. North 90, Veritas boys 76

Independence, Mo. – It was an offensive showing by both teams, especially K.C. North, which made nine three-pointers.

“It was an exciting game to watch,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “We played really good defense. They were just hitting the three-pointers from well behind the arc.”

It was tight late before K.C. North salted the game away at the free-throw line.

Mark Randtke scored 25 for Veritas (9-7), which will play host Friday to Olathe Christian.
