Old Hometown – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 31, 1906: “Elaborate preparations have been made by the YMCA for a new year’s celebration from 2 to 5:30 tomorrow. There will be an open house to which everyone is invited and it is expected the turnout will be sizable. : It is estimated that at least 40 are dead and 80 injured as a result of a rail accident in the Baltimore area yesterday. Searches are still ongoing for dead or injured. The Baltimore and Ohio train apparently was derailed while nearing Washington. . . . Hugh Bunton who works at the planing mill suffered the loss of his nose when a board flew up and hit him. He is due for extensive surgery but it is uncertain if his nose can be saved.”
