With the start of the new year at hand, Kansans had to get accustomed to not being able to buy their favorite beverages in cans with the old detachable pop tops. The new attached stops were an environmental measure.

The Lawrence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was putting emphasis on the need for infant seats for children in motor vehicles and were making the seats available on a rental basis. State Rep. Jessie Branson of Lawrence had led the effort in the Legislature to improve child safety.
