Marathons conclude ’06

The year culminates on a weekend this year, giving viewers plenty of time to look back, glance forward and watch football. Whether you’re making resolutions, downing libations or hoping to cover the point spread, there is no shortage of viewing opportunities.

Marathons abound as 2006 ticks down. Bravo takes the trend to the limit, offering a 10-hour opportunity to catch up with “Friday Night Lights” from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. On one level this is a really good idea. Bravo is owned by NBC, and the Peacock Network has high hopes for the critically acclaimed, ratings-challenged, documentary-style series about a small Texas town consumed by high school football. At the same time, this is Bravo, a network that has done a good job defining itself with shows like “Project Runway,” “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and “Blow Out.” I’m not really sure how football fits into the game plan here.

It’s also the last weekend of the regular NFL season and the culmination of the college-bowl game glut. Do gridiron fans want to tune into fictional football when there’s so much real action to choose from?

Viewers can watch “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” all day beginning at 5 a.m. Sunday on USA. The Family Channel will air 11 episodes of “Ugly Betty” (8 a.m. Sunday). AMC is feeling lucky, spending all of Sunday with Clint Eastwood movies.

“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2007” (9 p.m., ABC) celebrates its 35th year of ringing in the New Year with contemporary music acts. Accompanied by “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, Clark will preside over 2006’s dwindling moments from New York’s Times Square to the accompaniment of music by Christian Aguilera, Rascal Flatts, Fergie, Natasha Bedingfield, Meat Loaf and Latin music phenomenon RBD.

Not to be outdone, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo will join forces to simulcast “NBC’s New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly” (10:30 p.m. Sunday), also from New York’s Times Square. Featured musical acts include Panic! At the Disco.

Cat Deeley, British TV personality and host of the summer series “So You Think You Can Dance,” will preside over the “New Year’s Eve Special” (10 p.m. Sunday, Fox). Musical acts include Toni Braxton and “Idol” star Chris Daughtry with his band, Daughtry.

“MTV Goes Gold: New Year’s Eve 2007” (10 p.m. Sunday) will feature live performances by Gwen Stefani, Nas, Pussycat Dolls, Ciara and others.

And as if to prove that everybody is a potential Dick Clark, CNN news personality Anderson Cooper will host that network’s New Year’s Eve coverage live from New York (10 p.m. Sunday) and host musical acts from a variety of cities.

Whether you ring in 2007 in a throng of thousands, dancing under a lampshade or tucked into a pint of ice cream in front of a “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” rerun on USA, I wish you and yours a healthy and happy holiday.
