Bigg’s Barbeque will continue a New Year’s tradition it started three years ago, serving free helpings of black-eyed peas to all customers Monday.

The restaurant, which bills itself as “barbeque with a Southern twist,” will offer complimentary servings of the traditional side dish, just as it has each New Year’s day since 2004.

A staple in the Southern diet for more than 300 years, such peas are thought to bring luck and prosperity in the New Year, said Doug Holiday, Bigg’s co-owner.
