Surviving your first solo holiday season

Nobody likes to be alone during the holidays, but it can be even worse if you’ve gone through a recent divorce or breakup.

Ana H. Weber, author of “Dumped: The Ultimate Guide to Starting Over,” offers these breakup survival tips for the holiday season:

¢ Although it’s nice to cherish memories, don’t spend too much time remembering previous Thanksgivings, holidays you spent together or “The way we were.” You WERE that way for a reason, and that is not the way it is now.

¢ Don’t spend too much time dwelling on previous fights or what was said during the break up itself. Having these negative thoughts can only get in the way of enjoying a nice moment now.

¢ Dump clutter into the trash can outside your home. Last year’s Turkey Day tablecloth, the last Christmas ornament you bought together, the goofy bear that sings the Hanukkah song – those all need to go … now!

¢ Take a deep breath and realize that your newfound freedom can be good. No hours spent trying to buy a picky mate that perfect gift or tolerating his or her crazy family at Thanksgiving Dinner.

¢ Focus on the moment. Great things are happening right now. Snow is falling, people are holiday shopping, the radio is playing cheerful songs.

¢ Block out negative thoughts. DO NOT let yourself dwell on your sadness or the breakup all day.
