First cases of flu confirmed in state

The first flu cases of the season in Kansas were confirmed Friday by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

One of the cases resulted in the death of a person who was older than 70 in south-central Kansas.

Two flu cases were found in three other individuals from south-central Kansas and one in northeast Kansas. Two of the cases involved children under the age of 5, and two cases involved people between the ages of 5 and 24. KDHE would not identify the victims further.

The flu is not a reportable disease in Kansas, so KDHE doesn’t have all of the information about the cases. KDHE has agreements with several health care providers in certain regions to receive possible flu specimens to test.

The state is reporting sporadic flu activity to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health experts say it isn’t too late to get a flu shot.
