Setting realistic resolutions

TV personality Dr. Phil McGraw shows up on the cover of the January issue of Good Housekeeping to offer advice on making New Year’s resolutions.

For those vowing to have a better marriage in 2007, McGraw suggests setting a specific goal – such as spending more time together or improving communication – that addresses a problem in your relationship. Then create a timeline to help achieve the goal. If you want to spend more time together, find a few hours one night a week for a date night.

McGraw also points out that instead of trying to fix your marriage, a better approach is to think about how to be a better partner. Do a small act of kindness every day for your spouse and give at least one compliment a day. Most likely your partner will return your goodwill.
