Kansas Regent Henry Bubb suggested that athletic coaches at state-supported schools be given one-year contracts to be settled on a year-by-year basis to prevent payoffs in the event of firings and hassles when coaches ran out on long-term agreements. Reference was made to the four-year, $56,000 payoff Kansas University had to make the football coach Jack Mitchell when he recently was removed from his job while supposedly signed to a “lifetime” contract.
