Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 20, 1906: “Cattlemen are becoming increasingly alarmed at the shortage of railroad cars to handle their shipments and are going to Washington to get something done. They complain that coal is being shipped in cars needed for livestock and that their business is suffering badly. : The engineering students and faculty at KU have met with the goal of lobbying Kansas during the Christmas period on behalf of a new engineering building on the campus. They are getting desperate for ‘want of room.’ : A number of citizens have reported nighttime activity by a pair of ‘peeping toms’ who carry a lantern to light their way to peering into windows. : Dink Dixon has been freed of perjury charges after he was brought to bear for lying about liquor activity. Apparently he did not. : Some thief robbed more than $115 from the safe of the D. Davis home at 701 Ark. and did such a smooth job there are not any clues to who did it. : It seems like everyone in town has been downtown buying for Christmas and it should be a good year for merchants.”
