Powdery substance probably flour

Lawrence police on Monday arrested a 69-year-old man from rural Douglas County for causing a scare by delivering a package full of white powder to a local dental office.

It turned out to be a harmless powder consistent with flour, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical.

Crews were called about 9:45 a.m. to the offices of Wiklund, Peterson and Krische, 2210 Yale Rd., after employees reported finding powder in an envelope the man had hand-delivered.

A hazardous materials crew handled the powder, tested it and found it to be “inert and non-threatening,” according to police.

Shaun Coffey, division chief for Fire and Medical, said there was a “high probability” it was flour, based on the testing and the police investigation.

Police and sheriff’s deputies contacted the man at his home address and arrested him for making a criminal threat.
