Army Maj. Ronnard Green, Lawrence, recently completed a 16-month deployment to Iraq and returned to his home station at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. His next assignment will be at Fort Leavenworth beginning Feb. 1.

After a year in Iraq, Green’s unit learned of a four-month extension to its stay just 72 hours before a scheduled redeployment.

Cadet William “Nick” Ryan, a member of the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at Kansas University, will be commissioned as a lieutenant during a ceremony Monday.

Ryan, who will serve in the Adjutant General Corps detailed to infantry, will receive a bachelor’s degree in history from KU. He is the son of William K. Ryan, Olathe, and Karen L. Wray, and is a graduate of Lawrence High School.

The ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Monday in KU’s Military Science Building, 1520 Summerfield Hall Drive. Col. Richard E. Arnold, U.S. Army Force Management Support Agency at Fort Leavenworth, will give an address.

Army Pvt. Adam N. Garcia has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, Garcia studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and physical fitness; received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training.

He is the son of John Garcia, McLouth. Garcia is a 2002 graduate of a high school program at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park.

Air Force Airman Von S. Schmidt has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. During the six weeks of training, Schmidt studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies, performed drill and ceremony marches, and received instruction in physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and human relations.

He is the brother of Mia Gonzalez, Lawrence.
