Eudora man gets prison for purse snatching

A judge on Wednesday sentenced a Eudora man to 41 months in prison for snatching a purse earlier this year at a business on Sixth Street.

Vernon D. Folks had requested that District Court Judge Paula Martin give him probation on his charge of robbery and allow him to live in a halfway house.

He blamed mental-health problems, including bipolar disorder and drug addiction, for his actions.

“I don’t want to live like this any longer,” he said. “I cannot live life without medication and therapy.”

But Martin turned down the request, saying there were no compelling reasons under state law to break from sentencing guidelines that called for prison.

Police arrested Folks on April 27 after a woman reported he had pushed her and stolen her purse outside TherapyWorks, 1112 W. Sixth St.

He also was charged with an attempted robbery the previous week in the parking lot of Dillons, 1015 W. 23rd St., but prosecutors dropped that charge as part of a plea agreement.
