The first acquisition of land for improved flood protection for North Lawrence was approved by the City Commission as it authorized condemnation for a 135-acre tract in Jefferson County. The step was considered a major move in the drive to bolster North Lawrence ramparts, currently rated no better than they had been before the devastating 1951 flood.
