Wichita ? Kansas farmers harvested far fewer dry beans this year, Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday.

In its monthly crop production report, the agency said production of dry beans was 24 percent below last year’s crop. It estimated production at 210,000 hundredweight.

Pinto beans are the main variety grown in Kansas.

The agency did not indicate what drove the production plunge, and comments it received in its survey did not hint at any reasons for a decline in the state.

Yields and harvested acres both were down this year.

The report estimated yields at 2,100 pounds per acre, down by 100 pounds from last year’s reported yields. Kansas farmers harvested 10,000 acres of beans, or 2,500 fewer than in 2005.
