Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 11, 1906: “From Paris comes the news that the Catholic Church in France today becomes homeless and awaits eviction from 26,000 buildings valued at $200 million. Under the law, these are declared state property. Under the harsh policy of Premier Clemenceau the goal is to sell the property or convert it to state use. If Clemenceau does all he plans, the greatest religious eviction since the French Revolution has begun. : The city is insisting that the Union Pacific Railroad improve safety factors at its many crossings in the community. Either watchmen or signals are being demanded after recent accidents.”
