The investigation had reached a dead end in two November arsons that gutted parts of student living units in Lawrence. The two fires, both started in elevators, caused a combined $140,000 in damage to Naismith residence hall and Jayhawker Towers apartments. There were no serious injuries. Dist. Atty. Mike Malone said there had been two Kansas University students who refused to answer questions about their actions just before and after the fires but that there had been no arrests. “I don’t know if these cases will ever be solved,” Malone said. “Solid leads are very scarce.”
