Christmas shows abound

Nearly every major network has consigned Saturday nights to the dustbin of repeats. Hallmark and Sci Fi movies are the notable exception. These formulaic offerings reach for very different audiences but have a similar comfort-food appeal.

So it’s interesting to note that former “Party of Five” star Jeremy London appears on both networks in the space of a few weekends. Last month, he starred in “Basilisk: The Serpent King,” and tonight he plays James, a yuppie lawyer, in “What I Did for Love” (8 p.m. today, Hallmark).

After a Christmas proposal, James’ girlfriend (Dorie Barton) insists that they return to her ranch home for the holidays so her father (James Gammon) can bless their engagement.

¢ Jim Carrey stars in the title role of director Ron Howard’s 2000 adaptation of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (8 p.m. today, ABC). An unnecessary desecration marked with wretched excess in almost every frame, “Grinch” inspired a cornucopia of bad reviews. My favorite, from Salon.com: “You will not like it on the screen, you will not like it – not one scene!”

¢ Jenny McCarthy has long been typecast as the loud, buxom blonde, for the good reason that those roles encompass the alpha and omega of her modest comic talents. She stars in “Santa Baby” (7 p.m. Sunday, Family), in which she plays Mary Class, an aggressively ambitious business consultant whose romance and career are upended when she is called away suddenly on family business.

We soon discover that her family’s business is the Christmas business and that she is the headstrong daughter of the now ailing Santa Claus (George Wendt).

Today’s highlights

¢ A bride and groom go on a cruise and receive a makeover on the two-hour “How Do I Look? Wedding Special” (8 p.m., Style).

¢ A mother dies under mysterious circumstances on “Law & Order” (9 p.m., NBC).

¢ Annette Bening hosts “Saturday Night Live” (10:30 p.m., NBC), featuring Gwen Stefani and Akon.

Sunday’s highlights

¢ Scheduled on “60 Minutes” (6 p.m., CBS): the fate of the Abu Ghraib whistle-blower; Sicily’s lingering mafia; the ultimate-fighting phenomenon.

¢ The Cowboys host the Saints on “Sunday Night Football” (7 p.m., NBC).
