Chiefs’ lineman Turley hurts shoulder at practice

? Linebacker Derrick Johnson returned to practice for the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday, but right tackle Kyle Turley went out due to a shoulder injury.

Coach Herm Edwards said Turley was injured during practice and would undergo an MRI.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Edwards said.

Turley, attempting a comeback after being out of the league for two years following back surgery, has struggled at times against much bigger defensive ends.

John Welbourn would probably start at right tackle if Turley is unavailable for Sunday’s game against Baltimore. Welbourn started nine games at right tackle last year but has played very little since being suspended the first six games of the season for violation of the league’s substance abuse rules.

The Chiefs listed three starters as questionable for Sunday. Defensive lineman Jimmy Wilkerson sat out with a hamstring injury, safety Sammy Knight was nursing a sore ankle and defensive tackle James Reed “did very little” after missing last week’s game with a hamstring injury, Edwards said.

Getting Johnson back will be a big boost for the defense. The second-year linebacker, Kansas City’s surest tackler, has barely played the last five games.

“Now I can run laterally again,” he said. “That’s a lot better.”

His absence left a wide hole in a defense that until last week had been showing steady improvement.

“I’ll be out there Sunday,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve ever missed any games, including college. It was hard standing on the sideline knowing I couldn’t do my job.”

The Chiefs announced that they have signed a two-year contract with rookie tackle Tim Sandidge. Right tackle Kevin Sampson, who underwent surgery last week, was placed on injured reserve.

Meanwhile, members of the Marine Corps will be collecting toys at Sunday’s game versus the Ravens in a drive to benefit “Toys for Tots.”

The Marines are asking for toys that are new and unwrapped for boys and girls up to age 13.

This marks the 41st year the Chiefs have worked with the “Toys for Tots” campaign, longer than any other NFL team.

All toys will be collected at stadium turnstiles. Fans may also make financial contributions. Checks can be made payable to “Toys for Tots.”

The Chiefs host a squad from Baltimore for the first time since the Colts traveled to Kansas City in ’80 as the Ravens make their inaugural visit to Arrowhead.

The Chiefs have won all three of their previous meetings with the Ravens and will seek to extend that winning streak against Baltimore in a contest full of postseason implications for both squads.
