No. 18 Gonzaga falters

? Derrick Low scored 22 points to help Washington State defeat No. 18 Gonzaga, 77-67, on Tuesday night and improve one of the best starts in team history.

Daven Harmeling added 20 points for Washington State (8-1), off to its best start since the 1996-97 season under new coach Tony Bennett. The Cougars overcame poor free-throw shooting to break a seven-game losing streak to Gonzaga.

Many in the crowd of 10,755, largest at WSU in a decade, stormed the floor after the win.

Gonzaga (8-2) was led by Josh Heytvelt’s 22 points. Derek Raivio added 21.

Trailing 66-63 with less than four minutes left, Washington State outscored the Bulldogs, 14-1, including a pair of three-pointers by Harmeling, for the win. Kyle Weaver’s three-pointer gave WSU its first lead of the game at 45-44 with 16 minutes left.

The teams swapped several leads before a 9-0 Gonzaga run, the final six by Heytvelt, gave Gonzaga a 56-49 advantage.

No. 1 UCLA 78, Cal State Fullerton 54

Los Angeles – Arron Afflalo scored 20 points, and Josh Shipp added 16 to help UCLA pull away from Cal State Fullerton. The Bruins (7-0) defeated their third consecutive Big West opponent, but this one wasn’t as lopsided like the games against Long Beach State and UC Riverside.

No. 14 Arizona 72, Louisville 65

New York – Ivan Radenovic had 22 points and 13 rebounds for No. 14 Arizona, which overcame a terrible shooting second half for a victory over Louisville in the Jimmy V Classic.

No. 17 Marquette 65, Delaware State 48

Milwaukee – Jerel McNeal scored 16 points to help Marquette beat Delaware State. Four Marquette starters scored in double digits.

No. 24 Xavier 88, Detroit 55

Cincinnati – Josh Duncan scored 25 points and led a three-point flurry that swept Xavier past Detroit, giving the Musketeers an emphatic return to the Top 25.
