Higher fines for tickets approved

A proposal to increase fines for many traffic violations and some parking tickets was approved by city commissioners unanimously Tuesday night.

The proposal would increase Municipal Court fines for speeding and many other moving violations by $8. It would increase some parking violations, such as parking too close to a stop sign, by $10. It would not increase the fine for parking too long at a parking meter, though.

The fine increases were proposed by staff members as a way to bring them in line with what the state charges for similar offenses in district courts.
