Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run accident

A Lawrence man accused of striking and killing a Kansas University student in a hit-and-run wreck in September was arrested Monday afternoon.

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Joshua Ian Walton, 24, on a warrant for involuntary manslaughter while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

He left jail after posting $25,000 bond. His first court appearance will be Dec. 18, according to a Douglas County Jail report.

Ryan Matthew Kanost was struck and killed by a Toyota Camry about 1 a.m. Sept. 23 while walking near 13th and Kentucky streets. Walton, who police said was driving the Camry, initially left the scene but turned himself in later that day.

He was not arrested at the time. Lawrence Police turned their investigative report over to District Attorney Charles Branson in early November.
