Contents of A safe deposit box that included more than 8,000 in U.S. savings bonds - now, with interest, worth 40,000 - are being held by the Kansas Treasurer's Office. The bonds, issued in the names of three sisters from Kansas, are being retained by the treasurer's office until heirs of the sisters are located.

Tax refunds

Federal: The IRS says it is holding 535 tax-refund checks that were returned as undeliverable. See the full list of Kansans owed money – broken down by county – at www.ljworld.com. You also can check your individual status by going to www.irs.gov, and clicking on the “Where’s My Refund?” link.

State: The Kansas Department of Revenue says it has up to 2,300 refund checks awaiting proper delivery. If you haven’t received your refund, check its status at https://www.kdor.org/refundstatus, or call the department’s automated line at (800) 894-0318. Unclaimed property

Proceeds from inactive savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks, stock shares and bonds, dividend checks, insurance proceeds, mineral royalties, and utility deposits – along with physical property from safe deposit boxes – are being held by the Kansas State Treasurer’s Office.
