Rally to oppose power plant proposal

? Civic and environmental groups will join forces Saturday in Topeka for a rally opposing coal-burning power plants.

The rally will be at 11 a.m. on the Capitol steps.

The coalition includes True Blue Women, Sierra Club, Kansas University Environs, Sustainable Sanctuary Coalition of Greater Kansas City, and Concerned Citizens of Platte County, Mo.

The coalition opposes a proposal by Sunflower Electric Power Corp. to build three 700-megawatt plants in western Kansas. And it has asked Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to place a moratorium on new coal-fired plants in Kansas.

The coalition supports renewable energy.
