No. 13 Baylor survives scare

? Bernice Mosby nailed a short jumper with 2.2 seconds remaining to lift No. 13 Baylor to a 64-62 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night.

The Islanders (1-5) had possession with 13 seconds left to play, but Jillianne Duffey lost the ball out of bounds while driving to the basket, giving the Bears (7-1) a chance for the win.

Mosby paced Baylor with 21 points, 17 of them in the second half, and Jessica Morrow added 14 and Jhasmin Player had 11. Mosby scored nine of Baylor’s final 11 points in the last five minutes.

Kirbria Lewis led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 16 points, Elisa Beagle had 14 and Nicole Lewis 11.

The Bears led 51-42 with 81â2 minutes remaining, but A&M-Corpus Christi reeled off 10 straight points to lead 52-51 on Beagle’s jumper with 5:31 to play.

The teams exchanged leads down the stretch with the Islanders going in front for the final time 60-58 on a jumper from Jenesis Shaw with just over two minutes on the clock.

In the first half, the Islanders narrowed their deficit to 24-21 with just over four minutes remaining. But the Bears responded with a 6-2 run and led 30-23 at halftime.

No. 25 Texas 71, Southern 23

Austin, Texas – Texas held Southern to a school-recordlow seven first-half points and scored 30 points off turnovers.

Aubrey Cook tied a career high with 15 points as Texas (6-1) held Southern to two fewer points than Rice scored in the first half of their game in 1990.

Texas is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season when it began 7-0.

Southern (0-5) shot just 24 percent for the game and committed 32 turnovers.

To slow the pace, the Jaguars rarely crossed half court with more than 10 seconds on the shot clock. But that forced them into hurried shots and 14 turnovers in the first half, which resulted in 12 points for Texas.

Deidra Jackson led the Jaguars with 10 points.

Texas went on runs of 15 points and 12 points to take a 27-7 halftime lead.

Eleven Longhorns scored in the game, including Tiffany Jackson, who scored 11 points in limited action.
