A preliminary plan for the beautification and redevelopment of the Lawrence downtown business area was presented at a joint meeting of business people, public officials and chamber of commerce leaders. the cost was expected to run in the neighborhood of $300,000 per block and the early reception of the suggestions was generally favorable.

Activity was beginning to pick up sharply on and around the Kansas University campus, even though first classes would not begin until Sept. 19.
