Two Lawrence organizations are seeking people interested in creating a pilot project to offer “humane and cost-effective” permanent and supportive housing.

The Coalition on Homeless Concerns and the Community Interfaith Initiative are exploring the housing options. They are organizing a trip to Leavenworth and Kansas City, Kan., on Sept. 1 or Sept. 5 to examine similar programs there.

“We’re looking for people who are interested in being stakeholders in this project, such as landlords and those in faith leadership,” said Steve Ozark, one of the organizers of the effort.

If successful, the Lawrence project would establish housing for six to 10 people in apartments or other buildings that can be redesigned into private living quarters. The project aims to serve those with mental illness and who are recently released from prison or homeless.
