Do-It-Yourself network descends upon Lawrence
It’s so frumpy it’s trendy.
A series of events starting Wednesday is bringing the “do-it-yourself” craze to Lawrence.
If the mood strikes you, you can make buttons, learn to doctor T-shirts with sewing notions or make vegan snacks.
It’s part of a 12-city tour to promote the Yaris, a new car manufactured by Toyota.
The events will culminate with a concert by the band Davan and block party from noon-5 p.m. Saturday at Burcham Park, Second and Indiana streets. Twenty concert-goers will be given video cameras to record the event, which will be posted at www. yarisworks.com a week after the show.
With the popularity of the DIY Network, organizer Steve Kleinberg of the Drillteam PR firm in New York says the crafty events have been popular.
“Based on my experience in the previous markets we’ve been in, it’s a big hit among 18- to 34-year-olds,” he says. “Even something as simple as button-making. I’ve worn buttons all my life but never in a million years thought about making a button.”
