Ex-KU pitcher Walrond to start for Cubs today

Former Kansas University standout Les Walrond is back in the major leagues, and will start for the Chicago Cubs today in St. Louis.

Walrond was 10-5 with a 3.98 earned-run average at Triple-A Iowa in 2006, prompting the call-up. It will be his second stint in the big leagues – he appeared in seven games with the Kansas City Royals in 2003, going 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA.

A left-hander, the 29-year old Walrond played at KU from 1996-98 before being drafted by the Cardinals.

Kansas now has two former players on major-league rosters. Southpaw Tom Gorzelanny, who was KU’s closer in 2002, now is a starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
