Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 26, 1906: “Alban Stewart has been heard from. He is a graduate of Kansas University who for several years has been connected with the Smithsonian Institution and who for a year has been identified with the expedition sent out by the California Academy of Science to the Galapagos Islands. Many important studies seem to be going on there and Stewart seems to be quite enthusiastic about the scientific findings in the remote area. .: The school year that opens Sept. 12 at the university will find a large number of new instructors on the faculty. Three positions still need to be filled but no problems seem likely in doing so. A number of the new people have outstanding credentials, a credit to the university and its leaders and a benefit to the students. There has been wonderful growth for the engineering school in particular. : One-third of the sum required for a piano factory here has been pledged. In all, $30,000 is needed, it will take $20,00 to start building and so far $10,000 is available. The plan offers investors their money back with interest.”
