Army Pvt. Garrett W. Jones has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and physical fitness. He received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony marching, rifle markmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises. Jones is a senior at Lawrence High School. He is the son of Wendy Jones and Brian McKay, Lawrence. He is the grandson of Ronnie and Beth McKay, Wellsville.

Shannon Calahan has been promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Calahan is the principal regional emergency preparedness liaison officer assigned to Headquarters 81st Regional Readiness Command at Birmingham, Ala. She has served in the military for 24 years. Calahan, a native of Lawrence, is the daughter of Hiram Brown, Birmingham, Mich., and Jean Newman, Phoenix. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1978 and received a bachelor’s degree in 1982 from the University of Tampa.
