Showers in forecast through weekend

Heaviest rains expected Saturday

Pull the cobwebs off your umbrella – it’s likely to finally get some use as widespread rainfall moves into the Lawrence area through the weekend, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“Before it’s all done, I think everyone should get a soaking,” Schack said.

There’s a chance for more scattered showers this morning, but the heavier rains won’t arrive until tonight and Saturday, she said.

The National Weather Service says the chances for rain are 70 percent tonight, 70 percent Saturday, 50 percent Saturday night, 50 percent Sunday and 40 percent Sunday night

An isolated storm boomed through Lawrence overnight, but quickly moved to the east, not leaving behind any measurable rainfall, she said.

At 8 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 77 degrees, the humidity was 88 percent and winds were out of the east at 7 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 66 degrees. The record low was 49 degrees, set in 1958.

Schack said today’s high temperature should climb to 89 degrees. The average high temperature for this date is 88 degrees. The record high was 109 degrees, set in 1911.

“We are expecting periods of heavy rainfall on Saturday,” she said. However, it will just be rain – no strong thunderstorms are expected, she said.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to a low of 69 degrees by early Saturday morning, she said

The temperature will climb to a high of only 78 degrees on Saturday as periods of heavy rainfall fall through the day, Schack said.

Sunday’s morning low temperature will fall to 66 degrees, with Sunday’s high climbing to only 79 degrees, she said.
