From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 24, 1906: “Most people in Lawrence know Prof. James Naismith invented the game of basketball. Few, however, know when or where or how or why. Everybody’s Magazine for September tells such interesting things about the game and the man who gave it to the world of sports with his invention in Springfield, Mass. Kansas University is fortunate to have this able, gentle man as an athletic instructor and a spiritual leader. : New football rules provide for the forward pass under the new rules edited by Walter Camp of Yale University. The changes are many and coaches will feel the pressure to develop good backs, especially quarterbacks who can throw the ball. Runners when tackled can throw the ball over their heads to teammates and scores of games this fall are due to be quite large due to a lot of scoring. The forward pass came about after President Roosevelt threatened to abolish football because of its roughness and brutality. Passing could help alleviate some of this.”
