A man used a gun to rob a convenience store at 9 tonight near 23rd and Iowa streets.

Clerk Matthew Downing, of Presto Convenience Store, 2330 Iowa, said the man pointed what looked like a single-barrel shotgun at his head and demanded money.

A customer in the store was forced onto the ground. But no one was injured.

Downing said the man took about $400 and ran away to the south. He described the man as a 20-year-old light-skinned black male, who was about 5 feet 5 inches tall. He wore a white shirt with baggy jeans and a blue handkerchief over his face.

Another man was the apparent lookout and ran to the north after the robbery, Downing said.

Police are investigating the robbery, which has forced the 24-hour store and gas station to close.

How awful. I hope Mr. Downing takes a vacation. Scary.

They will find him. They usually do because most criminals are very stupid.

In light of this incident, I cannot imagine why any decent citizen would feel the need for Concealed Carry.

As has been said many times by others on this forum, Lawrence is a safe place to live.

Well, what I had in mind was letting the robber get to the front door and then shouting out, "Hey, you!" and as he turned drop the hammer!

Or not shouting anything and drop the hammer.

:)

I am very familiar with the rules of deadly force.

There is not a jury in the world which would convict the clerk even if the bandit had nine holes in his back.

I refer you to the case of the liquor store robbery at 18th and State Avenue a few years back in which the owner shot the guy, reloaded, chased the perp into the parking lot and then shot him some more until the perp gave up the ghost.

Tomasic, the DA, wanted the guy bad but the jury refused to convict, not once, but twice.

By the way, you cannot run forever from the violence but you can learn to be prepared and deal with it when it comes your way.

I grew up in KCK, so I know.
