Teachers, district to resume salary talks

Salary negotiations between Lawrence teachers and school district officials resume at 4:30 p.m. today at the district service center, 110 McDonald Drive.

The session will be the first meeting of the two sides since the Kansas Supreme Court’s July 28 decision to dismiss the school finance lawsuit.

District officials have said they expect to receive an additional $2.8 million in state aid this year. They also have announced their intent to increase local property taxes later this year.

How much of the additional revenue will be used to raise teacher salaries remains to be seen.

Earlier this summer, teachers asked for a new salary grid, allowing teachers to reach their peak salaries in 15 years rather than 25.

School officials have said raising teacher salaries is a top priority.
