83-year-old dies in I-35 accident

An elderly Kansas City, Mo., woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a crash near Ottawa while her vehicle was stopped in the right lane of Interstate 35.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Deborah Beal, 55, Lee’s Summit, Mo., about 2:30 p.m. swerved her northbound 2006 Chrysler car to try to avoid a 1986 Volkswagen Golf that was stopped for an unknown reason in the same lane on the busy freeway. Ruth Baxter, 83, drove the Volkswagen.

Beal’s car rear-ended Baxter’s car, which caused it to burst into flames, according to the report. Baxter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Beal was taken to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. She had been wearing her seat belt.
