School safety

With the excitement of a new school year comes the need for drivers to show extra caution.

The start of school no longer coincides with changing fall colors and falling leaves, but increased traffic and safety concerns still come with the territory, especially in Lawrence.

University students struggling to find their way around town pose one challenge, and the opening of Lawrence public schools adds to the need for drivers to be alert and cautious.

Elementary schools held their first day of classes Wednesday, and junior high and high schools will be in full swing today. Older students will be driving to class while younger ones will be walking or being dropped off by parents.

It’s a busy scene that is loaded for potential for mishaps. All around Lawrence, but particularly in the vicinity of schools, drivers need to show extra caution and keep a watchful eye for youngsters who may not be paying enough attention to traffic. Parents need to show courtesy and caution as they drop children off at schools to make sure everyone arrives safely at their destination. School zone speed limits will be back in force.

Especially in the excitement of a new school year, it takes our entire village to make sure every child arrives at school safely. Here’s hoping students, parents and drivers will all rise to the challenge.
