Hearing on county budget set for Wednesday meeting

Douglas County residents will have a chance to comment Wednesday night on county government’s final 2007 budget proposal, which calls for a slight decrease in the mill levy.

The levy would drop less than a mill, from the 30.099 mills needed to support this year’s budget to 30.026 mills for next year. A mill is $1 in tax for every $1,000 in assessed valuation.

The estimated net expenditure for 2007 is $49.07 million.

That doesn’t mean taxes will go down, however. Property values have generally increased, and the Kansas Legislature’s limiting of state revenue-sharing payments to counties are among factors that could contribute to tax increases, county officials have said.

The county commission meeting starts at 6:35 p.m. in the county courthouse, 1100 Mass.

Commissioners also will:

¢ Discuss a final plat for the Stevens Addition, a replat of Quantrill Acres subdivision “welcome” park at the southwest corner of North 800 and East 1485 roads.

¢ Consider a conditional use permit for a T-Mobile cell phone tower at Kasold Drive and Interstate 70.

¢ Consider a request for rezoning 6.18 acres from suburban home residential to limited commercial at East 900 Road north of Clinton Cove 2.
