Old Home Town – 40 years ago
Housing facilities for Kansas University students were expected to be adequate the coming fall even though enrollment was expected to rise again.
The state census showed Lawrence with a population of 28,699, up from the year before, with the county total 40,407. But the state total was far short of the federal figures that included students. The evidence was that the city population was close to 43,000 and the county total at least 50,000. Officials were concerned about the lack of tax support due to “shorted” state figures, which always lagged the federal totals at considerable cost to college towns such as Lawrence and Manhattan.
