A recently approved law tightening loan eligibility requirements and raising interest rates was spurring Kansas University students to apply for federal loans at a record rate before the restrictions could take effect. Jerry Rogers, director of KU’s office of financial aid, said there had been about a 60 percent hike in interest about loans since the announcement of the changes.
A 23-year-old Topeka woman was arrested in connection with the murder of another Topeka woman in rural Douglas County. The victim was Terry L. Brown, 25, who had been found dead from a number of gunshot wounds. The slaying was the first recorded in the county during the year.
