Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 14, 1906: “The farm laborer who created excitement by buying things on credit for his wedding and then skipping out was back in town, presented a $20 check for a pair of shoes, took the change and has not been seen, since the checks he wrote are without funds. Many are on the lookout should he surface again. : B.F. Woodward, one of our oldest settlers, died at the age of 89 at his home southeast of Clinton. : Several economists say the business of the nation is in good health and that even better times may lie just ahead. Locally, that also would seem to be the case. : The Anti-Saloon League of Oklahoma has joined hands with the Indian Territory temperance people to make Oklahoma a prohibition state by constitutional amendment. This is the kind of prohibition enjoyed in Kansas. : The sixth annual County Protective Assn. picnic in Eudora begins tomorrow and it will, as usual, be a major event for the area. :U.S. Sen. Chester Long of Kansas plans to campaign this year by auto, perhaps the first ever to do so in the state.”
